Everywhere we turn, we are taught that we must listen to our parents, that we must obey them and that they know whats best for us. But sometimes i wonder do they really know what is best. They are humans as well.

Do they know whats it like to be under pressure to study for exams that keep coming all year round? Or how hard it is to make friends cause u dun really get a chance to spend time with them?

Parents will always talk about their own childhood, saying they had a hard life. Needing to tap rubber trees at 2 or 3 in the morning. Or having to eat rice with nothing else. How they could never go to the cinema, go to the beach to have fun or just hang out some place. They say that life was bad, they know it was bad, but they want us to go through the same life as them? We have our own difficulties that we must handle. Most of which they would never be able to understand.

Now, we have other responsibilities. Planning school events or church events, or sometimes just making things that happen almost daily work. But they see it all as us having fun. The more committed you are, the harder you work and the more time you spend doing those things, the angrier your parents get.Sucks..doesnt it.

Then come the paradoxes, or hypocrites?

They want you to learn new things….but never let you go out to experience them

They want you to make friends…but dun let you go out to spend time with them

They want you to be able to think for yourself…but will make your decisions for you

They want us to learn from our mistakes…..but they will only scold you and not teach you from their ‘vast’ life experiences

The only part they do well is always wanting you to stay home and study….all year round, during the holidays, right after ur exams, anytime at all

We DO know the importance of studying, we study our butts off for our exams and when we get not so good results. Well, we would get a glimpse of hell.

Lastly, to any parents who read this..try to understand why we do what we do…that we have our own thoughts, our own goals, our own commitments and our own dreams. Just the same as you.

This may a generalization and a little unfair to all those parents out there…but its the same way u generalize and stereotype us.

This is my personnel view and i would love to hear your thoughts.
